Writer's picture: Paolo AldiPaolo Aldi

La Commune de Paris. Wednesday, March 22, 1871. Today another demonstration by the "Amis de l'Ordre" (Friends of the Order). A procession of some 800 or more people, monarchists, aristocrats, and wealthy bourgeois, opposed to the insurrection travels through the streets of Paris to reach Place Vendôme (where National Guard has set up its command).

The demonstrators, also armed with revolvers, disarm and beat up two Guardsmen and then facing the battalions of deployed National Guardsmen provoke a shootout. Eight dead and about thirty wounded. The demonstration breaks up with a stampede of demonstrators.
