The Commune de Paris. Notable events today

The Commune de Paris. Tuesday, April 4, 1871. The Communard offensive, launched yesterday, fails today in Châtillon and about 1,500 men are taken prisoner and taken to Versailles. Many soldiers of the Civil Guard of the Commune are murdered after their surrender. Émile Duval, who headed the Communard army corps that moved yesterday on the left front, surrenders today after being overwhelmed. He was shot the same day together with his chief of staff, contrary to all the laws of war that prevent the shooting of the surrendered. Archbishop Darboy is arrested in Paris. Gustave Paul Cluseret is appointed war delegate of the Commune. In Limoge, in the morning, the population with many women in the front row, together with the National Guard, successfully try to prevent the departure and passage of government troops sent against the Paris Commune. The railway station, the prefecture are occupied and the Commune is proclaimed. In the evening, however, the arrival of new government regiments suppresses the insurrection and the return to government order is immediate. The Communard experience ends today in Marseille as well.
